In the year 2015, Mahindra and Mahindra set the Indian auto markets ablaze with its compact SUV TUV300. Now again, it created an all new segment with the so called ‘Young SUV’, KUV100. This is unquestionably a distinctive product with design traits of an SUV and a small hatchback. It comes in a range of seven trim levels with petrol and diesel engine options, wherein Mahindra KUV 100 mFALCON G80 K2 Plus is the low end petrol trim. Will this new product could do wonders for Mahindra? Can it be a phenomenon in India? Let us take look into it. 

Pros

• The compact and light weight engine with low end torque for better drivability. Its monocoque construction adds to the performance quality.

Cons:

• Comfort features are very basic and not up to the mark.

Overview

Mahindra and Mahindra brings an all new produce and so called young SUV, KUV100 to India in a bid to target young customers. We are now reviewing the low-end variant mFALCON G80 K2 Plus, which is a petrol trim powered by an all aluminum, mFALCON G80 petrol engine. Its external style and monocoque design slightly resembles with the XUV500 model. It has a bod front facade, which is further emphasized by the large headlight cluster. Step inside the cabin and you will notice the quality fit and finish given to its cabin, especially in cockpit section. There are a few standard comfort features along with some significant security elements. This new vehicle does have reasonable features for the price tag it has. 

Exterior

This new entrant has a distinctive look unlike other vehicles of this brand, which are usually boxy in terms of appearance. The name “KUV100” definitely matches with the way it is shaped and designed. Its bold front facade with a small grille featuring vertical slats and company's logo look modish. On either sides, its headlight cluster has a signature Mahindra design. The beefy bumper comes with a perforated air intake section, while the tinted glass made windscreen provides a better view ahead. A set of steel wheels along with attractive covers are seen on its sides, which are adorned with tubeless tyres. Door handles and outside mirrors both get body color finish meanwhile, its crease lines make it look more alluring. Another thing to notice is the pillar mounted rear door handles, which are similar to those in Chevrolet Beat. Compared to its front and side profile, the rear end looses on sporty structure. However, distinctively designed taillight cluster renders it a modern stance. 

Interior

The first thing you will notice once you step inside the cabin is the eye-soothing color scheme. Its cockpit section has a bench seating arrangement, similar to that in Datsun GO hatchback. This enables it to take in a total of six passengers. Housed on the dashboard, is a three spoke steering wheel and an advanced instrument cluster comprising of multiple functions. The automaker has placed the AC knobs vertically on central console. Also, it is accompanied with gear lever that makes room for three passengers in the front cabin. The headrests integrated to them, further provide good support to the neck. Besides these, there are a few storage spaces to store all your stuff.  

Performance

Petrol:

The low end trim, Mahindra KUV 100 mFALCON G80 K2 Plus trim brings with it the all new mFALCON G80 engine, which is light in weight and said to be a decent performer on roads. This 1.2-litre motor is capable of producing 82bhp power at 5500rpm and delivers a 115Nm torque at just 3500 to 3600rpm. Compared to its rivals, its high torque delivery at low rpms means greater response and drivability, especially on city roads. This drive train is compliant with BSIV emission norms. Its transmission duties are handled by a five speed manual transmission gear box. Manufacturer claims that the vehicle can deliver 18.15 kmpl. It may not look to be the best in its segment, but considering its stature, it is reasonable. 

Ride & Handling

Assembled with its front axle is an independent McPherson strut layout accompanied with dual path mounts. While the rear one gets a semi-independent twist beam suspension. Additionally, coil spring and hydraulic gas charged shock absorber is loaded on both the axles. Expect the steering quality to be decent, since the vehicle has a power assisted steering. It supports a minimum turning radius of 5.05 meters, which should not be a problem. On the other hand, it comes with a traditional disc and drum braking system for efficient performance. Its efficiency is augmented further with the help anti lock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution. 

Safety

Safety is a big let-down with this base variant. However, presence of important features like dual front airbags and ABS with EBD is a relieving factor. The car maker has constructed this vehicle using monocoque chassis layout. This means that the vehicle can deal with collision and can safeguard passengers to some extent. Engine immobilizer is given as a standard feature, which can secure the vehicle from theft. 

Verdict

If you need a vehicle just to travel from place A to place B and if you are on low budget, here is the vehicle for you. It is KUV100 mFALCON G80 K2 plus. It may not have all the equipments of a mid-ranger, but has enough features that can keep you comfortable while driving. One more positive factor is that the features like ABS with EBD and dual front airbags are on offer with this variant. It is a perfect vehicle for families and moreover, it is a six-seater.
