VW ज़ेटा : Practical yet fun
Drove the VW Jetta TDi Highline with the DSG transmission recently. This car feels solid like any other German engineered machines. The car is well quipped with a flappy pedal gear box which responds well in time, the touch screen 8 speaker audio system, dual zone climate control and 8 way electronically powered driver's seat. Also, features that are standard in this segment like the tilt shift steering, DLR headlamps, automated night dimming rear view mirror, headlamp washers and a cooling compartment in the dash & a few others are also available. The 140 bhp (approx.) chunky engine delivers enough power to take the car from 0-100kmph in about 9 seconds which is good and the car feels planted on the road at high speeds. The steering although feels heavier than the competing vehicles from Hyundai, Renault or Chevrolet but responds well along the curves. The DSG gear box is good in the city in the "D" or Drive mode where it maintains a good RPM ratio keeping the car silent although a heavy plunge at the accelerator pedal makes it drop gears instantly and push the RPM upto 4200 comfortably. This is also possible with the flappy paddle shifters where enthusiasts can have some fun and also the pedals make life easier for overtaking if and when required. The breaks respond well and even when hit hard do not give away and the car stops dead in line. The interiors as i already mentioned are well quipped and are also tidier than the rivals. Some people might find them too simple for their taste when compared with the other cars in the segment. The seats are beige high quality PU, which are no short of class even when compared to leather. There are patches of wood trims along the doors and the front dash in combination with dark grey and beige leather which are put together very well, although there are some bits and pieces where they could've done better in terms of quality. The seats cradle you and are much more comfortable as compared to it's German Brother the Octavia in the front and the rear. There is ample leg room in the back with AC vents and the car is quite and extremely comfortable even at high speeds. The car is comfortable along bumpy roads. The brand claims an average of 19kmpl but the vehicle I was driving was doing about 14.5kmpl in the city and 19 on the highway when gear ratios were extremely subtle. With harsh driving the avearge dips to 12 kmpl on the highway when pulling it at high RPMs for long runs. Overall if you have a budget of 20+ lacs it's a good car even if you're driving it or you are driven in it. One thing that has to be kept in mind while buying a VW is that it's service is expensive as compared to any other brand in the same segments but the car doesn't demand much work if kept well in the long run.
