It was time to purchase a family car. I had taken a budget of 14 to 15 lacs ex showroom and was looking for a viable option. The new Toyota Innova Crysta was recently launched. Along side the Creta which cannot really be considered in the same category but was doing great numbers in sales and reviews. So I could decide between a top end Creta, GX model Innova Crysta or even some sedans in that price range such as the new Elantra and the new Altis. I ruled out the sedans due to the fact of boot storage space while traveling with children as well as in favour of the road clearance an SUV or MUV delivered. Being left with the final two choices I clearly opted for the Toyota as it has the brand value, low maintenance costs, refined interiors and plastics used and of course a powerful 2.4 litre engine compared to the smaller engine in the Creta.I found my choice really to be a no brainer. You can never go wrong with an Innova. The new vehicle is head and shoulders above the older model Innova. The engine power delivery is sooner, smoother and more linear even so in the diesel model which is the only model I have driven as I have not driven the petrol model. The power of the engine is noticeable as it eases to 100-120 in no time and feels comfortable enough to go further in case you want to pedal down. These dynamics were certainly one of the reasons to buy this car as such an engine is very welcome on long outstation drives as well as while moving on the hills in India.The space has been increased in all quarters, width, length and maybe even height. The new cabin is wonderful to sit inside and sprawl yourself. On the front dashboard the upward slant of the dash for ease of access for the air conditioner controls and other buttons is worth a mention as it is not only practical but gives a very smart look. The gear changes are smooth, although, this is one area where there certainly is scope for improvement. I purchased the manual being that sometimes I would drive and at other times it would be driven by the driver. Hence, I did not feel the need for an automatic. Having said so the gear change is not as smooth as I would have wanted it. I am hoping that Toyota takes cognisance of this and brings some improvements in coming years.The overall looks of the car are great. It has a presence wherever it goes and many friends have said that they don't understand to spend so much on an Innova. However, I am happy with my decision as the final product by Toyota is head and shoulders above any competition in any category. The reason to spend more money on the Innova is that there has been improvement in every section of the car from the previous version as it is clear that Toyota want to bring the status of this car from a simple taxi van to a more luxurious family utility vehicle.
